How do we recover USB flash drive data?

We perform lost data recovery from USB flash drives which aren’t detected by a computer; are detected as empty; are inaccessible; are unable to store new data or are detected with zero byte volume.

We successfully restore data from USB flash drives of various manufacturers such as Sandisk, Kingston, Silicon Power, Samsung etc.

There are various possible reasons for USB flash drive data loss, from accidental deletion to hardware problems. Incorrect disconnection of the device might also lead to data loss. It is also worth noting that an overall quality of storage devices on the market leaves much to be desired. Often it has to do with memory cells located in the integrated circuits. High competition rate on a manufacturers market makes companies release masses of devices that weren’t fully tested, but boast with high speeds and new functions. Scope of work related to data recovery varies, therefore the price range is wide.

Flash drive malfunctions

  • Logic issues;
  • Mechanical issues;
  • Electrical issues and overheating;
  • Hardware issues and memory wear;

Logic issues

Two main problems here are formatting and deliberate or accidental data deletion. Two more logic-related problems are operating system errors or crashes and consequences of viruses. In all these cases full data recovery is possible. Operating system issues are usually accompanied by messages requiring disk formatting and are usually connected to OS partition tables being damaged or being detected as RAW. Not removing storage devices safely can also lead to logic issues.

Mechanical issues

All mechanical issues lead to a total lack of feedback from the device and impossibility of removing the device by conventual means. Let’s say the device felt into a cup of water or was stepped on by your cat; the device case is fragile and usually can’t protect the device in these cases, which leads the case and the contacts to being damaged.

It is important to know that in case the device in question contacts sea water or sugary drinks it is extremely inadvisable to plug the device in a computer or give it connecting it to any kind of power supply as it can lead to a total loss of data!

In case of exposure to solutions it’s advised to bring the device to a service lab. Do not try to open the device after the forming of rust.

Electrical issues and overheating.

Flash drives occasionally burn out as a result of low-quality power supply units, unstable operations, impacts of static electricity, power surges, etc. In addition to these factors, flash drive power supply usually equals 3.3v and manufacturers try to save money by utilizing cheaper and more basic board protection. Let us not forget about the human factor which can often lead to issues. For example, trying to unplug the device at an acute angle or trying to forcefully plug in the device the wrong way etc. Overheating can also occur as a result of a low-quality soldering or soldering of defective parts. In theory, memory chips can operate at 125°C, however in practice memory cell issues appear and multiply at 70°C

In case of mechanical and hardware damages we disassemble the device completely, unsolder the memory chip and try to read the information directly through it. We have all the required equipment for this task.

Controller issues

Diagnosing these issues is simple:

  • Flash drive remains undetected by a computer;
  • The device is detected but its volume is 0 byte;
  • Appearance of a formatting notification;
  • Data is inaccessible;
  • “The disk is write protected” error message.

Controller executes data transfer between the memory card and the computer, as well as encrypts and decrypts the information.

Hardware issues and memory cell wear

Memory chip is the most reliable part of a flash drive, however it has its own disadvantages tied with a number of rewrite cycles which equals to approximately 100,000 for modern models. In cheaper models this number is ten times lower. In case the rewrite cycle threshold is reached certain issues occur, mostly connected to inability to write new data and, as a result, inability to save or copy files (the number of bad sectors in these cases grows exponentially). In these cases, full data recovery is usually impossible, however in many cases most of the data can be successfully restored, but the recovery process itself takes a lot of time and is accompanied by a high number of errors.

In order to restore data, the device must be fully disassembled, memory chips must be unsolded and the data must be read using the appropriate adapter..
