Why does my hard drive make ticking noise?
In case ticking noises can be heard, there is a high possibility of mechanical issues in the disk itself which appears as a result of malfunctioning read-write heads. Hard disk is a high precision device which stores your data. Its correct storage depends on hard disk’s stable performance, thus it’s important to detect and solve mechanical issues early on.
Dropping or hitting the hard drive can lead to mechanical issues which can manifest themselves months or years after the event. Listening for various problematic sounds, such as loud noises, clicking or tapping helps identifying issues. Complete silence inside hard drive’s hermoblock also helps identifying these issues.
What is inside a hard drive?
It’s important to know that while the disk is working, the distance between the read-write head and the disk must not exceed the width of a hair, thus:
- In case the disk wasn’t opened in a clean room, dust particles will cause irreparable damage to the disk.
- In case the disk was dropped from the smallest height, the heads will touch the platters and leave scratches.

- Poor quality power supply unit, faulty cables and contacts;

It’s important to identify hard drive work issues in time. It’s worth noting that both hard drives and solid-state drives are somewhat unreliable, that’s why backing up your data is always a good idea.
In case you notice performance issues and your data isn’t backed up, first thing you need to do is turn off your PC and take out your hard drive (not give it any power supply). Don’t try restoring data with programs downloaded from the Internet because all of them use the same algorithm in their work. If your hard disk has physical damage or mechanical issues, using these programs will make the situation worse and may even make further data recovery impossible.
